SERVICE SUMMARY:

We don’t like to wait. For anything. If you have an appetite for something, chances are there’s an app that promises to deliver it to your doorstep within 48 hours. In an age of instant gratification, patience can seem like a relic of the past—almost quaint. Yet this year has forced all of us to wait for the end of the COVID crisis. How can we wait for patience, especially when we’re out of control? Join us this Sunday as we celebrate Advent and learn to cultivate the virtue of patience. Click HERE to RSVP to service.

SCRIPTURE:

James 5:7–11

7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Loving and faithful God,

As we begin advent, we celebrate that Jesus has come, and that He promises to come again! Jesus came to bring light, hope, joy, peace—new life. But during this pandemic, we acknowledge that we have often not lived as if this was true. Our lives have slipped into despair, anxiety, restlessness, cynicism, and forgetfulness.

Father, because Jesus entered the world to conquer sin and death, we ask that you would come into our lives and cleanse us by your Spirit as we silently confess our sins to you.

silent confession

Lord Jesus Christ,
whose first coming brought joy to your waiting people, keep us in faith and hope
as we eagerly await your coming again. Amen.

SONG TO CONSIDER

Verse 1
Oh righteous branch from Jesse’s root
Please come and bring your kingdom
The lion dwelling with the lamb
Bring peace and life and freedom

Verse 2
Oh Son of David come to rule
And reign in us forever
Come write your law upon our hearts
And keep us like a shepherd

Refrain:
Hallelujah, Jesus we wait for you
Hallelujah, Jesus come soon come soon

Verse 3
Messiah come, your Spirit give
Turn stony hearts to flesh
Redeem us from captivity
The power of sin and death

Refrain:
Hallelujah, Jesus we wait for you
Hallelujah, Jesus come soon come soon

Verse 4:
At last, at last the morning comes
With healing in its wings
We’ll leap like calves loosed from their stalls
For you have done great things
Yes, you have done great things!

Refrain 2x:
Hallelujah, Jesus we wait for you
Hallelujah, Jesus come soon come soon!
