We hear it all the time: “All paths lead to the same God.” But we don’t seem to apply that logic anywhere else in life. No one puts an address into Google Maps and then choses whichever street they prefer at the intersection. We want to get where we’re going. The God of Israel revealed himself as the One and Only True God. It was audacious a claim then as it is today. Join us this Sunday as we continue our sermon series from the prophet Isaiah in order to understand what this might mean for us.

Pretending that the world’s religions are the same does not make our world safer. Like all forms of ignorance, it makes our world more dangerous. What we need on this furiously religious planet is a realistic view of where religious rivals clash and where they can cooperate.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

—John 14:6

Hebrews 1:1-6, 10-12

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
Or again,
“I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

10 And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
12 like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed.
But you are the same,
and your years will have no end.”

Isaiah 46:5-13

“To whom will you liken me and make me equal,
and compare me, that we may be alike?
6 Those who lavish gold from the purse,
and weigh out silver in the scales,
hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;
then they fall down and worship!
7 They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it,
they set it in its place, and it stands there;
it cannot move from its place.
If one cries to it, it does not answer
or save him from his trouble.
8 “Remember this and stand firm,
recall it to mind, you transgressors,
9 remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me,
10 declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, ‘My counsel shall stand,
and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
11 calling a bird of prey from the east,
the man of my counsel from a far country.
I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass;
I have purposed, and I will do it.
12 “Listen to me, you stubborn of heart,
you who are far from righteousness:
13 I bring near my righteousness; it is not far off,
and my salvation will not delay;
I will put salvation in Zion,
for Israel my glory.”

CONFESSION OF SIN: During this season of Lent we will be singing our confessions of sin. There will be space for silent, private confession during the song. Please use this time to reflect on the ways you’ve failed to love God and your neighbor and confess them to our Merciful God.

For God alone – my soul in silence waits
For God alone – my soul in silence waits

He alone is my rock and my salvation
I will not be shaken
My hope is in Him
All my hope is in Him

How long, how long will ever men drag me down?
How long, how long will ever men drag me down?

He alone is my rock and my salvation
I will not be shaken
My hope is in Him
All my hope is in Him
