SERMON SUMMARY: Christians often pray to God as “Father”, but do we really trust in his fatherly love for us? What would it look like to truly live as a “child” of God? Come and learn more as Pastor Joshua Burdette teaches from Romans 8.

REFLECTIONS:

The story of paradise lost becoming paradise regained is the story of God’s grace bringing us from alienation from him to membership in his family. God’s grace restores us to what Adam lost for us – sonship to the God who made us, loves us, and provides for us in every detail in life.

—Sinclair B. Ferguson

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

—Stuart Townend

SCRIPTURE:

Psalm 69:1-3,13-16, 30-33

Save me, O God!

   For the waters have come up to my neck.

2 I sink in deep mire,

   where there is no foothold;

I have come into deep waters,

   and the flood sweeps over me.

3 I am weary with my crying out;

   my throat is parched.

My eyes grow dim

   with waiting for my God.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.

   At an acceptable time, O God,

   in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.

14 Deliver me

   from sinking in the mire;

let me be delivered from my enemies

   and from the deep waters.

15 Let not the flood sweep over me,

   or the deep swallow me up,

   or the pit close its mouth over me.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;

   according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.

30 I will praise the name of God with a song;

   I will magnify him with thanksgiving.

31 This will please the Lord more than an ox

   or a bull with horns and hoofs.

32 When the humble see it they will be glad;

   you who seek God, let your hearts revive.

33 For the Lord hears the needy

   and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.

Romans 8:14-17

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

CONFESSION OF SIN:

Father, giver of all life, you fearfully and wonderfully made us;

But we confess that we often refuse to honor and thank you as our Creator.

Holy Spirit, you have given us a new identity in Christ;

But we confess we are hard hearted and prone to seek comfort in idols.

Lord, you nurture and care for us as a loving parent;

But we confess we reject your love and turn from your comforting voice.

God, have mercy on us, and pardon us through Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Amen.
