Call to Worship

This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;
ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
and you will find rest for your souls.

SONG OF PRAISE

HEARING GOD’S WORD

Psalm 1

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

This is the Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Jesus I am resting resting
In the joy of what Thou art
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart
Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee
And Thy beauty fills my soul
For by Thy transforming power
Thou hast made me whole

Jesus I am resting resting
In the joy of what Thou art
I am finding out the greatness
Of Thy loving heart

Oh how great Thy loving kindness
Vaster broader than the sea
Oh how marvelous Thy goodness
Lavished all on me
Yes I rest in Thee Beloved
Know what wealth of grace is Thine
Know Thy certainty of promise
And have made it mine

Simply trusting Thee Lord Jesus
I behold Thee as Thou art
And Thy love so pure so changeless
Satisfies my heart
Satisfies its deepest longings
Full supplies its ev’ry need
And surrounds me with Thy blessings
Thine is love indeed

Ever lift Thy face upon me
As I work and wait for Thee
Resting ‘neath Thy smile Lord Jesus
Earth’s dark shadows flee
Brightness of my Father’s glory
Sunshine of my Father’s face
Keep me ever trusting resting
Fill me with Thy grace

CONFESSION OF FAITH

Christian, what do you believe:

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

*The word catholic means universal. The creed confesses to the unity of Jesus Christ’s church across the world and throughout the ages, regardless of denominational affiliation.

HEARING GOD’S WORD

Matthew 7:13–14

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

This is the Word of the Lord

Praise to you Lord Christ

SONG OF RESPONSE

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light my strength my song
This Cornerstone this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love what depths of peace
When fears are stilled when strivings cease
My Comforter my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand

CALL TO WORSHIP

“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?

Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.

HEARING GOD’S WORD

Mark 14:17-28

17 And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”

Praise to you Lord Christ

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.

Hear us now as we silently name the specific ways that we have sinned against you.

MYSTERY OF FAITH

Together, we proclaim what Christ has done.

Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

RECEIVING THE BREAD AND WINE

Christ Our Passover has been sacrificed for us.

Hallelujah, let us keep the feast!

The Gifts of God for the people of God

Thanks be to God!

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The Feast

With wondering eyes, Lord we admire
the feast prepared by grace;
Come, Lord, and set our souls on fire,
and fill each heart with peace.
These emblems of thy precious love, by faith may we receive!
And with a solemn pleasure prove, we in thy name believe.

We eat this bread, we drink this wine,
come give yourself to us.
We know you’re here, that’s why we’ve come,
to feast on thee with love.

No goodness of our own we bring; we’re sinners vile and base;
Christ is our all; of Christ we sing, and long to see his face.
O may we each, with heart and tongue sing, “Worthy is the Lamb”;
To him alone the praise belongs, and we’ll adore his name.

All Praise to Thee, My God this Night

1. All praise to thee, my God, this night,
for all the blessings of the light!
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
beneath thine own almighty wings.

2. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
the ill that I this day have done,
that with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3. Teach me to live, that I may dread
the grave as little as my bed.
Teach me to die, that so I may
rise glorious at the judgment day.

4. O may my soul on thee repose,
and with sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
sleep that may me more vigorous make
to serve my God when I awake.

5. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise him, all creatures here below;
praise him above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Renewal

Romans 14:1-4, 7–10, 13, 19

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and olet not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master1 that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10   Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God…

13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. … 19 Let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

This is the Word of the Lord

Praise to you Lord Christ

HEARING GOD’S WORD

Matthew 7:1-6

“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

  • Pray that the Lord would work to enable us to return to a fuller communion with one another soon.
  • Give thanks that though we do not celebrate the sacrament of Communion together today – we yet have true communion with Jesus and one another through the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in every believer, giving us union with Christ and all his people.
  • Ask God to grow in you a deeper hunger and desire to commune with him and his people in this time of waiting and separation.

COMMISSIONING

CLOSING SONG

CHORUS:
Heal us, Emmanuel, here we are
We long to feel Thy touch
Deep wounded souls to Thee we fly
O Savior hear our cry

1. Our faith is feeble, we confess
We faintly trust Thy word
But will You pity us the less?
Be that far from You Lord!

2. Remember him who once applied
With trembling for relief
“Lord, I believe,” with tears he cried
“O help my unbelief!”

3. She, too, who touched you in the press
And healing virtue stole
Was answered, “Daughter, go in peace
Thy faith has made thee whole.”

4. Like her, with hopes and fears we come
To touch You if we may
O send us not despairing home
Send none unhealed away

  3. Was there anything said (sung, read, prayed, etc.) that that spoke to your current fears, hopes, or needs?
  4. Which idols are you tempted to run to during uncertain times? Why is God better than those idols?
  5. What would your life look like if you really believed the main point of the sermon?

Renewal

Isaiah 42:5–10

Thus says God, the Lord,
    who created the heavens and stretched them out,
    who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
    and spirit to those who walk in it:
6 “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;
    I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
    a light for the nations,
7     to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
    from the prison those who sit in darkness.
8 I am the Lord; that is my name;
    my glory I give to no other,
    nor my praise to carved idols.
9 Behold, the former things have come to pass,
    and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
    I tell you of them.”

10 Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise from the end of the earth,
you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it,
    the coastlands and their inhabitants.

This is the Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Confession of Sin

Almighty God, you have commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves.
But today, as we contemplate our lack of love, we are humbled to the dust.
To often we avoid others when they bother us;
We ignore others when they don’t interest us;
We use others when they benefit us;
We reject others when they sin against us.
Our love is shallow and self-centered.
Forgive us, Oh God.

Silent Confession

Thank you that in Christ you have loved us with a love incomprehensible.

May your love fill us and transform us for the glory of your name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

SONG AND CONFESSION OF FAITH

HEARING GOD’S WORD AND PRAYER

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

This is the Word of God,

Praise to you Lord Christ

Song of Praise

Come, thou Almighty King, help us thy name to sing.
Help us to praise:
Father all glorious, o’er all victorious,
Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days.

Come, thou Incarnate Word, gird on thy mighty sword
Our prayers attend.
Come, and thy people bless, and give thy Word success
Spirit of holiness, on us descend.

Come, Holy Comforter, thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour.
Thou, who almighty art, now rule in ev’ry heart,
And ne’er from us depart, Spirit of Pow’r.

Father, now call us out of our wandering.
Jesus, now come and cast out our fear.
Spirit, now preach the Son to our deafness:
Open our hearts, open our hearts. (x3)

Open our hearts, open our hearts.
Open our hearts, open our hearts.

To thee, great One in Three, eternal praises be
Hence evermore:
Thy sov’reign majesty may we in glory see,
And to eternity, love and adore.

Hearing God’s Word:

Genesis 6:1-5

1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. 5   The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Song/Prayer

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art;
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.

I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
No sudden rending of the veil of clay,
No angel vision, no op’ning skies;
But take the dimness of my soul away.

Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh;
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear.
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh,
Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.

Hast Thou not bid me love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind.
I see Thy cross; there teach me to cling:
O let me seek Thee, and O let me find!

Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame;
The presence of Thy descended Dove,
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.

Hearing God’s Word:

Galatians 5:16-25

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For  the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

This is the Word of God,

Praise to you Lord Christ

Let our light shine in every eye
Let us be known by our love

For the glory of the Father
For the glory of the Son
For the glory of the Spirit
Let us be known by our love

Let us be known by our joy
In every home, in every heart sing to the Lord
Let our life show goodness and hope
Let us be known by our joy

For the glory of the Father
For the glory of the Son
For the glory of the Spirit
Let us be known by our joy

Let us be known by our peace
In every town, in every tribe Jesus is King
Let us go forth, heal and restore
Let us be known by our peace

For the glory of the Father
For the glory of the Son
For the glory of the Spirit
Let us be known by our peace

Sermon Discussion Questions

Answer these questions based off the service, songs, and sermon you just participated in. If you are with family or roommates, answer them together. If not, consider calling someone from church and discussing these together:

  1. What was one thing that you really needed to hear today?
  2. What was the main point of the sermon, and how is that good news for Santa Barbara?
  3. Was there anything said (sung, read, prayed, etc.) that that spoke to your current fears, hopes, or needs?
  4. Which idols are you tempted to run to during uncertain times? Why is God better than those idols?
  5. What would your life look like if you really believed the main point of the sermon?
  6. What is one thing you wish you could tell your unbelieving neighbor?

Call to Worship

Praise God and proclaim what Christ has done!

Dying, he destroyed our death;
rising, he restored our life.

Christ is risen!

He is risen indeed!
Alleluia!

Song of Praise

I know that my Redeemer lives;
what joy the blessed assurance gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives, my everlasting Head!
He reigns above our victorious King of love.
All praise we give our great Redeemer lives.

He lives, to bless me with His love;
He lives, to plead for me above;
He lives, my hungry soul to feed;
He lives, to help in time of need.

He reigns above our victorious King of love.
All praise we give; our great Redeemer lives.

He lives, my kind, wise, heavenly Friend,
He lives and loves me to the end;
He lives, and while He lives, I’ll sing;
He lives, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

He lives, all glory to His Name;
He lives, my Savior, still the same;
What joy the blessed assurance gives;
I know that my Redeemer lives!

Invocation

Lord we need you every hour. Be with us this hour so that we can worship you in spirit and truth. Be glorified in us as we enjoy and praise you. Amen.

Hearing God’s Word:
Isaiah 43:1-5

Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
    and the flame shall not consume you.
3 For I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as your ransom,
    Cush and Seba in exchange for you.
4 Because you are precious in my eyes,
    and honored, and I love you,
I give men in return for you,
    peoples in exchange for your life.
5 Fear not, for I am with you;

This is the Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Renewal

Confession of Sin

Father of Mercy, forgive our unbelieving hearts.
Even when confessing our belief in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, we have failed to let the resurrection transform us.
We often doubt your power over death and live as though you are unable to save us. We doubt your promise to make all things new and live as though this world is all there is.
We have participated in sin and let worldly passions reign in us.
We have failed to love you and our neighbor as ourselves.
Father, by your grace transform our hearts and lives that they may reflect the life of the risen Christ in us.

silent confession.

Christ is risen!

He is risen indeed!

Lift up your troubled hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord!

Assurance of Pardon

In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us.

—Ephesians 1:7–8

Father for Thy, promised blessing,
Still we plead before Thy throne
For the times of, sweet refreshing,
Which can come from Thee alone
Blessed earnests, Thou hast given,
But in these we would not rest
Blessings still with, Thee are hidden,
Pour them forth and make us blest!

Prayer ascendeth to Thee ever,
Answer! Father, answer prayer
Bless oh bless each, weak endeavor,
Blood-bought pardon to declare
Wake Thy slumbering, children wake them,
Bid them to Thy harvest go
Blessings O our, Father make,
Round their steps let blessings flow

Let no people be forgotten,
Let Thy showers on all descend
That in one loud blessed anthem,
Millions may in triumph blend
Give reviving, give refreshing,
Give the looked-for Jubilee
To Thyself may, crowds be pressing,
Bringing glory unto Thee.

Give reviving, give refreshing,
Give the looked-for Jubilee
To Thyself may, crowds be pressing,
Bringing glory unto Thee.

Hearing God’s Word:
John 16:4-15

But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

This is the Word of God,

Praise to you Lord Christ

The Preached Word

SONG OF RESPONSE

When your people were bound in oppression
And your children were slaves in the land,
When they cried to their Father in anguish,
You came with salvation in hand

In The pillar of clouds you led them
Through a wasteland of desert by night.
When your children cried out in their hunger
You opened the sky to give life.

Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit
Will You come and deliver again
Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,
Will You come and give life again

When the prophets of Baal gathered round him
And Elijah called to you alone,
You did not leave him helpless to wonder;
You sent fire to make yourself known.

In the dark of the tomb he was buried
A Savior whose followers fled
But their sin and their doubt could not speak a sound
As loud as His triumph over death!

Age to age you have answered your people
With awesome displays of your might
Now we call on the same Holy Spirit
Give power to be salt and light

COMMUNION

Confession of Faith

Christ is not dead. He is risen!

Alleluia, he is risen indeed!

Though this world is bruised and broken by the fall,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

Though we walk in the valley of the shadow of death,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

Though we suffer the toils and futility of work in a cursed world,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

Though all creation groans for redemption,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though we sin daily in thought, word, and deed,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though the good we want to do is often left undone,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though we are homebound in fear of death and disease,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though we lose work, income, and daily bread,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though we lament new losses every day,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though the Evil one seeks to devour God’s children,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though we are afflicted in every way, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Though we are always carrying in the body the death of Jesus,

Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

 Christ is not dead. He is risen!

Alleluia, he is risen indeed!

Celebrating the Lord’s Supper

    • Take a moment to mourn the fact that our church body is not able to assemble all together this Sunday.

Song of Praise

lyrics in video

Invocation

Father of life, by the resurrection of your Son,
you overcame sin and death to make all things new in him.
Give us joy in celebrating your victory, and raise us to new life through Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hearing God’s Word:
John 20:1-10

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

This is the Word of the Lord

Praise to the risen Christ!

Confession of Sin

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

silent confession.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

“Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Know that, in Christ, our sins are forgiven. Rejoice in his victory!

Hearing God’s Word:
John 20:11-18

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[a] “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

This is the Word of the Lord

Praise to the risen Christ!

Love Divine, victorious.
Risen Life, all glorious.
One with the Father, one with us.

No more need we fear the grave.
Someday soon you’ll wipe our tears away.
The night is breaking into day.

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Sin and death you overthrew.
Risen One make all that’s sad come untrue.
Son of God make all things new.

Love divine, victorious.
Risen savior, glorious.
King of kings reign over us.

Christus Victor! Christus Victor!
Christus Victor! Christus Victor!

Hearing God’s Word:
John 20:19-23

19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,[a] Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Call to Worship

This is the day that the Lord has made;

let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Save us, we pray, O Lord!

O Lord, we pray, give us success!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hosanna*, come Lord Jesus!

—Psalm 118:24-26

*Hosanna is a Greek word of Hebrew origin which means, “save, now,” and may have been both a cry of help and happiness for salvation.

Song of Praise

All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer King,
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring!
Thou art the King of Israel, thou David’s royal Son,
Who in the Lord’s name comest, the King and Blessed One!

The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went;
Our prayer and praise and anthems before thee we present.
To thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise;
To thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise.

Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring,
Who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King.
All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer King,
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring!

Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!

Invocation

Holy Father, our strength in suffering and our hope for salvation,
lift up your Word of life and pour out your Spirit of grace
so that we may follow faithfully on the way to the cross;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hearing God’s Word:
Matthew 21:1-10

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5 “Say to the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

humble, and mounted on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

This is the Word of the Lord

Praise to you Lord Christ

Confession of Sin

Lord, this world is not the way it is supposed to be.

We are bruised and broken by the curse.

Lord, we have not lived the way we were supposed to live.

We have cursed you and our neighbors.

Lord, we confess the ways we have sinned and our sinful responses to the ways we’ve been sinned against.

We have looked to other things to heal our pain.

silent confession

Lord have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

Make us new.

Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

—2 Corinthians 5:21

In Christ, your sins are forgiven and you have been welcomed into the righteousness of God!

Setting of Psalm 13 by Poor Bishop Hooper

Hearing God’s Word:
Psalm 13

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.

This is the Word of God,

Thanks be to God!

The Preached Word

Confession of Faith

What hope does everlasting life hold for us?

It reminds us that this present fallen world is not all there is; soon we will live with and enjoy God forever in the new city, in the new heaven and the new earth, where we will be fully and forever freed from all sin and will inhabit renewed, resurrection bodies in a renewed, restored creation.

—New City Catechism Question 52

Intercessory Prayer
The Biblical Lament

Use David’s words in Psalm 13 to guide your lament. You may pray this now; you can pray it alone or with others. Consider spending some time in reflection and journaling your lament.

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
    How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I take counsel in my soul
    and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

State the ways that the world is broken and the pain you’ve experienced. This might be personal or global or even the pain of a loved one. Express the emotions you feel in response to that suffering (anger, sadness, fear, confusion, disappointment, etc.). Offer your questions to the Lord (How long? Why? When will you act to save me?).

3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
    light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
4 lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
    lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

Make your requests known to God. How would you like to see him act to help, save, heal, or deliver you? Cry out for God’s help.

5 But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
    my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the Lord,
    because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Put your faith in God’s promises. Anticipate his saving work in this age or the age to come. Remind yourself of God’s promises and his faithfulness to keep them. Ground your hope in the good character of the Lord and Christ’s death and resurrection. He will do what he has promised.

Blessed is he who comes, in the name, of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna in the highest!

Benediction

The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

—Numbers 6:24–26

Call To Fast

Every Monday that we are unable to meet for worship, the Session is calling for a corporate fast (Joel 1:14, 2:15; BCO62).

Please join us as we together humble ourselves and seek the Lord. If you are hindered from fasting on Monday, please consider another day.
