In all affairs it’s a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted.
― Bertrand Russell
I know that my redeemer lives,
and that in the end he will stand on the earth.
And after my skin has been destroyed,
yet in my flesh I will see God;
I myself will see him
with my own eyes—I, and not another.
How my heart yearns within me!
Welcome, Call to Worship, & Invocation
Jesus said: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” All who thirst, come to the water. Come, all who are weary; come, all who yearn for forgiveness.
The Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ has washed over us, and our gracious and holy God beckons and blesses us.
Drink deeply of these living waters.
Glory to you, O Lord, glory to you!
Song of Praise
How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
“Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am your God and will still give you aid;
I’ll strengthen and help you, and cause you to stand
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.
“When through the deep waters I call you to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless,
And sanctify to you your deepest distress.
“When through fiery trials your pathways shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be your supply;
The flame shall not hurt you; I only design
Your dross to consume, and your gold to refine.
“The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.
Hearing God’s Word:
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.”
This is the Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God
Confession of Sin
As your beloved sons and daughters,
we come to you grateful for your grace
and in need of your ongoing mercy.
For the ways we have feared evil and trouble, forgive us.
For the ways we have ignored your presence, forgive us.
For the ways we have doubted your provision, forgive us.
Loving Father, have mercy on us.
Replace our fear with the peace of Christ.
Remove our doubt by the presence of your Spirit.
We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.
By him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Prayers of the People
Lyrics in video
Hearing God’s Word
“In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
This is the Word of God,
Praise to you Lord Christ
Celebrating the Lord’s Supper
- Take a moment to mourn the fact that our church body is not able to assemble all together this Sunday.
- Pray that the Lord would work to enable us to return to a fuller communion with one another soon.
- Give thanks that though we do not celebrate the sacrament of Communion together today – we yet have true communion with Jesus and one another through the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in every believer, giving us union with Christ and all his people.
- Ask God to grow in you a deeper hunger and desire to commune with him and his people in this time of waiting and separation.
Confession of Faith
Christian, what is your only comfort in life and in death?
That I am not my own,
body and soul,
in life and in death—
to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood,
and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.
He also watches over me in such a way
that not a hair can fall from my head
without the will of my Father in heaven:
in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.
Because I belong to him,
Christ, by his Holy Spirit,
assures me of eternal life
and is making me wholeheartedly willing and ready
from now on to live for him.
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art;
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
No sudden rending of the veil of clay,
No angel vision, no op’ning skies;
But take the dimness of my soul away.
Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh;
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear.
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh,
Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
Hast Thou not bid me love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind.
I see Thy cross; there teach me to cling:
O let me seek Thee, and O let me find!
Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame;
The presence of Thy descended Dove,
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.

Sermon Discussion Questions
Answer these questions based off the service, songs, and sermon you just participated in. If you are with family or roommates, answer them together. If not, consider calling someone from church and discussing these together:
- What was one thing that you really needed to hear today?
- What was the main point of the sermon, and how is that good news for Santa Barbara?
- Was there anything said (sung, read, prayed, etc.) that that spoke to your current fears, hopes, or needs?
- Which idols are you tempted to run to during uncertain times? Why is God better than those idols?
- What would your life look like if you really believed the main point of the sermon?
- What is one thing you wish you could tell your unbelieving neighbor?
